Billing

How credits work

What AI credits and search credits are, how many you get on each plan, how usage is metered, and what happens when you run out.

The short version

Everything Saul does with AI costs credits. Your plan gives you a fresh batch of credits every billing month, and you can buy more at any time if you run out early.

There are two kinds:

  • AI credits — used whenever Saul reads, thinks, or writes: chat answers, quizzes, flashcards, outlines, notes help, and Legal Writing drafts.
  • Search credits — used only when Research mode is on and Saul actually searches the internet for you.

What uses AI credits

Every AI request is metered on how much text goes in and how much comes out. Roughly:

  • A short question with no attached materials is cheap.
  • A question grounded in a big outline, a long PDF, or an entire class is more expensive, because Saul reads all of that before answering.
  • Generating a full quiz, a flashcard deck, or a long draft costs more than a single chat reply.

That is why the same button can cost different amounts on different days — it depends on how much material Saul had to read.

What uses search credits

Search credits are only spent when the globe (Research) toggle is on and Saul runs an actual web search. One search request equals one search credit. If Research is off, you never spend a search credit — even if you ask about current events.

What each plan gets

  • Free (Survivor) — a starter monthly allowance of 500 AI credits, no search credits. Enough to try chats, quizzes, and flashcards.
  • Plus (Gunner) — a much larger monthly AI credit allowance of 5,000 credits, and access to the paid models (ChatGPT and Gemini).
  • Elite (Super Gunner) — unlimited AI allowance, the biggest search pool, Legal Writing, and Research mode everywhere.

You can always see your exact remaining balance under Settings → Plan & billing.

When credits reset

Your monthly grant refills at the start of each billing period. Unused monthly credits do not roll over — each period starts from your plan's full allowance.

Credits you purchased as a top-up are different: they do not expire at the end of the month and stay on your account until you use them.

What order they are used in

Saul always spends your monthly plan credits first, and only dips into purchased top-up credits once the monthly grant is gone. That way you never burn top-ups you did not need to.

Running out

When your balance hits zero, AI actions pause with a message instead of failing silently. Nothing you already created is lost — your chats, notes, outlines, quizzes, and materials stay exactly where they are, and you can keep reading them.

To keep going you can either wait for your next monthly reset, buy a top-up, or upgrade your plan. Top-ups are bought from Settings → Plan & billing and land on your account as soon as the payment clears.

Changing plans mid-month

Upgrades take effect immediately and your credit allowance moves up with them, prorated for the rest of the cycle. Downgrades and cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period — you keep your current credits until then, and the new, smaller allowance starts with your next cycle.
