How Legal Writing projects work (and who can use them)

Legal Writing is a dedicated workspace for memos, briefs and papers — available on the Elite plan.

Legal Writing is a separate tab in your workspace for long-form assignments — memos, briefs, seminar papers and any other writing project.

Who can use it

Legal Writing is included with the Elite plan. Free and Plus students don't see the tab; upgrading unlocks it immediately.

How a project works

  • Create a project from the Legal Writing tab. Give it a name and type, and optionally link it to one of your classes — the project's class is shown in the list, which is sorted by last edited.
  • Each project has its own editor with a chat beside it, so you can draft and ask Saul questions without leaving the page.
  • Select any text in the editor to get inline AI actions — summarize, expand, polish and more — in a small bubble above the selection.
  • Projects have their own Materials section, kept separate from your class materials, so research for a paper doesn't mix with course files.
  • Everything autosaves — including the title and description — as you type.

Research mode

The Legal Writing chat includes a Research button. Turn it on and Saul searches the web while answering, shows rotating "searching the internet" messages, and lists the web sources it used under the answer. It's ideal for current events and recent cases. See How to use Research mode.
